Ian was involved in planning and environmental issues with the City of Yarra from the late 90s until only a few years ago. He was a member of three Yarra Council Advisory Committees for six years (on planning, the environment and City Link) and stood for Yarra Council in 1999 & 2002. He has a background in science and teaching and then worked as a radio journalist/producer/presenter in the 80s and 90s, mainly with ABC Radio Australia. He's been a member of SOS since shortly after it was formed in 1998 in response to the deregulation of town planning laws by the Kennett Govt. during the 90s. He joined the SOS Committee in 2003. At the end of 2004 he was elected Vice President, and has been SOS President since November 2008. As a Community Planning Consultant, he has been acting professionally as an advocate for residents at the council level and at VCAT since 2001. He focuses on improved statutory and strategic planning controls and local government processes, including reform of VCAT, better and more integrated public transport and maintaining and improving the amenity and sustainability of metro Melbourne.
